This ashwagandha smoothie tastes like a chocolate dream thanks to raw cacao powder, nibs, and our special chocolate protein powder. Beyond tasting heavenly, this shake is filled with vitamins, minerals, and our secret weapon – ashwagandha.
Chill out with ashwagandha
Ashwagandha is a powerful herb that has been used medicinally for thousands of years. It fits into a category of herbs called adaptogens. Adaptogens are a general category of herbs that help balance the body by improving its stress response. Each unique type of adaptogen (think reishi, moringa, or maca, to name a few) has a different purpose and effect on the body. Some examples include improving focus, improving sleep, decreasing anxiety, or naturally increasing energy.
Ashwagandha specifically has been shown to help combat anxiety and stress by lowering cortisol levels naturally. It acts like the neurotransmitter GABA, which is naturally produced by the body to inhibit the activity of nerve cells.
Bliss out with cacao
In the theme of improving stress response and combating insomnia, raw cacao is the perfect addition to this recipe. It’s incredibly rich in magnesium, a mineral known for its calming effect on the body. Magnesium acts as the counterbalance to calcium, for example, magnesium helps muscles relax while calcium helps them engage.
An issue arises when our body is depleted of magnesium, in which case calcium will remain in the cells, creating issues with our body’s ability to combat stress. With nearly eight-percent of people being low in magnesium, it’s crucial to consume sources of magnesium like cacao, or Eliminate.
Cacao is also incredibly high in antioxidants. It is considered one of the densest sources of antioxidants, beating out superfoods like blueberries. Cacao contains antioxidants called anthocyanidins and epicatechins, which help neutralize free radicals in the body. When left active, free radicals can lead to premature aging, fatigue, inflammation, and other ailments.
2 tablespoon ashwagandha
1 tablespoons cacao
2 tablespoons cacao nibs
1 tablespoon almond butter
1.5 cup nut milk of choice
1 handful ice
Step 1: Remove skin and pit from avocado. Remove pit from date.
Step 2: Add all ingredients to a blender and blend on high until creamy and smooth. Serve immediately!
