The gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) is the body’s largest immune organ, and it resides in the gut microbiome. That means that the bacteria that live in the large intestine, part of the gut, play a role in building immunity and protecting against foreign invaders. If we want to strengthen our immune system, we must feed and nourish our gut.
Protein is critical for immune function, and protein malnutrition is a significant risk factor for death from infections. As a general guideline, we should be eating approximately half our body weight in grams of protein a day, whether from animal or plant-based proteins.
