Take one sip and you’ll feel like you’re eating a slice of blackberry cobbler, but you’ll get all of the benefits of a produce-rich meal in this delicious smoothie. The tart, juicy blackberries, combined with creamy coconut milk, sweet dates, and bright lemon will have you making this blackberry smoothie on repeat and loving every sip.
Blackberry Antioxidant Power
Blackberries are incredibly rich in vitamin C, with just one cup containing half of the recommended daily amount. Vitamin C is crucial for the production of collagen in the body, so you can consider this smoothie a skin-saving shake. Vitamin C not only helps improve elasticity in the skin and prevents premature aging, but it also keeps the lining of our gut healthy, improves bone health, and shortens the length of the common cold. It also acts as an important antioxidant, helping the body fight free radicals and oxidative stress.
Blackberries are rich in water and fiber, so they’ll help rehydrate you after a good night’s sleep and get your digestion going in the morning. Getting enough fiber is crucial for keeping bloating at bay, removing toxins from your system, and has been linked to longevity. Just one cup of blackberries has eight grams, so you’ll check off nearly a third of your recommended amount with this smoothie.
Lemon for President
We love adding zest to recipes for a burst of bright flavor and the dense concentration of micronutrients in the peel of citrus fruit. The skin of fruit, like lemons, helps protect the fruit during growth from damage that harsh weather, excessive sun exposure, and varying temperatures can cause. Since it plays a protective role, the skin tends to hold the highest level of antioxidants in the fruit. By including the skin as often as possible, you’re giving your body antioxidant and free-radical fighting powers. A diet high in antioxidants and phytonutrients has been linked to lower rates of heart disease and cognitive decline.
Vegan Yogurt for the Win
We love coconut yogurt as a creamy and tangy replacement for dairy-filled yogurt. If you are cleansing or find that you’re simply sensitive to dairy, this can be a great alternative. Coconut yogurt is filled with probiotics thanks to the fermentation process. Consuming foods high in good-for-you bacteria like coconut yogurt can help ensure a healthy digestive system. The bacteria found in the gut can impact digestion, serotonin production, mental health, and immunity. Eating fermented foods, a diet rich in organic whole foods, and taking high-quality probiotic capsules are a few ways to ensure excellent gut health.
