We’ve bottled up all of the decadent flavors of a ‘cookies and cream’ milkshake into a good-for-you smoothie that leaves out all of the refined sugar and dairy. Our version is filled with whole ingredients like maca, raw cacao, and coconut cream. It’s delicious enough to serve as dessert but healthy enough to serve as a nutrient-dense breakfast on the cleanse, or with the Daily Shake any day.
WE LOVE THE CRUNCH
Using raw cacao nibs gives this shake both the flavor and texture of a traditional cookies and cream shake. Cacao also comes with a slew of benefits to the body. Cacao is one of the densest sources of antioxidants you can find in nature. It contains over forty times the antioxidants in blueberries, which are so often touted for their antioxidant benefits. Cacao is also the highest plant source of iron. By consuming vitamin C with this type of iron you ensure that it is better absorbed, so we’ve intentionally paired cacao with maca in this shake since maca contains 133% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C per serving.
LET’S MACA ‘BOUT IT
Maca comes from a plant that is native to Peru and is typically sold in powder form. Traditionally, maca has been used medicinally to treat fertility issues, increase energy, and balance hormones. This adaptogen has a mild, nutty flavor similar to a sweet potato, which makes it a perfect addition to shakes and smoothies. Maca has good amount of fiber, vitamin C, and iron. Maca has been used to treat fertility and libido issues in men. Additionally, symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, and insomnia have all been shown to be effectively reduced through daily consumption of maca.
DON’T FEAR THE FAT
Certain nutrients (specifically, fat-soluble vitamins D, E, and K), are only absorbed and useable by the body when consumed with fat. We have added a healthy dose of important fats with the canned coconut milk in this shake. Not only does it make nutrients more accessible by the body, but it adds a creamy, rich texture that gives this shake a decadent feel. The fat in the coconut cream will also help satiate, ensuring that this shake can keep you full throughout your morning.
