Elimination Diet

Q: What is the point of doing the Elimination Diet before starting the 21-day detox cleanse?

A: By eliminating certain foods from your diet a few days before starting a cleanse, you body does not go into total shock when first starting the cleanse. Instead, the elimination diet helps ease your body into the program.

Q: How long should I do the Elimination Diet before starting the Clean Program?

A: This question has multiple answers. If you are a person who:

1. has done detox programs in the past, or follows a fairly healthy diet full of whole grains, vegetables and fruits, and eats minimal red meat, dairy and processed food, 3-4 days is a good amount.

2. is an average eater, which includes packaged foods, baked goods, dairy, caffeine, and alcohol, one week is a good amount.

3. has a fairly unhealthy diet full of fast food, soda, junk food, and alcohol, two weeks is a good amount.

Q: Why are certain vegetables like tomatoes and eggplants eliminated?

A: Tomatoes, eggplants, along with sweet peppers and potatoes are in a family of vegetables called Nightshades. According to Ayurvedic thinking, they are known to cause sensitivity to the body, and when eaten in excess, they tend to suppress the strength of our digestion.

Q: Why can’t I eat bananas during the cleanse?

A: Bananas are mucus-forming and constipating.

Q: What is wrong with strawberries?

A: Strawberries are known to be common allergens to the body and they currently are one of the top fruits covered with the most pesticides and herbicides, organic or not.

Q: Do you have a list of recipes that follow the Elimination Diet?

A: Yes, you can download them here.

Q: Are mushrooms okay on the Elimination Diet?

A: Yes, mushrooms are okay, but try to go organic when possible.

Clean Program Kit Specifics

Q: What does the Clean Ultimate Kit include?

A: The Kit includes 2 containers of Nourish, 1 container of Move, Ease, Balance, Clear-1, Clear-2, and Encourage: together these supplements make up:

Shake powders made from brown rice protein that contain all the nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients needed to support daily cell metabolism and the additional work of detoxification. A highly concentrated probiotic to rejuvenate your intestinal tract with healthy, viable flora. A combination of herbal antimicrobials that work to eliminate yeast and pathogenic bacteria
An herbal supplement that regulates insulin peaks and lows to eliminate cravings as well as facilitate fat burning.

Q: What are the daily goals while on the Clean Program?

A: You want to have two liquid meals for breakfast and dinner, one solid meal that follows the Elimination Diet for lunch, and allow a 12-hour window for total detoxification of the body to occur each night.

Q: Is the cleanse in the book, Clean, by Dr Junger, or the Clean Ultimate Kit better?

A: It depends by what you mean “better.” If you are a vegan, prefer to eat more whole foods, or have the time to prep your own shakes and juices, the book cleanse makes more sense for you. If you are a city person, always on the go, new to the cleansing world, want something easy, but yet, very effective, the Clean Ultimate kit is for you.

The Clean Ultimate kit is a supercharged version of the cleanse that Dr Junger has described in Clean the book.

In the words of Dr. Junger:

This is the way I see it:
The program as it is in the book would work if you find the ingredients in the recipes as they should be, full of nutrients, fresh, without long distances of transportation, and if you use reasonable variation. We never know exactly what we are getting any more. It is possible, if not likely, that you would not be covering the supply of everything that is needed for the important work of detoxification and repair that goes on during CLEAN.

When I advise people, I mostly guide beginners and people that will not realistically take the time to shop and prepare foods, so they do it with the Kit. The supplements I chose are of great quality and loaded with nutrients in the right combinations, specifically designed with the understanding of molecular biology and physiology, at the same time as using the understanding that humans, who are designed by nature, will benefit from the re-creation of more natural conditions. The nutrients in the kit are much closer to what some understand humans would be eating in the wild.

The kit is also designed to repair intestinal integrity. It has powerful herbal antimicrobials and probiotics, a blood sugar stabilizer that helps cravings dissolve, a digestive enzyme which further eases digestive work.
Most importantly, it works. I have seen hundreds of people just light up and become full of vibrant energy. It is not for everybody. Real food is always better, but it’s more likely to do it for you if you are already pretty CLEAN.
If there are lots of bad bacteria in your intestines, you will have to eat all the “food antimicrobials” all the time.

Yes, I have all the reasons to be biased towards the Kit, since I profit from your purchase. But the truth is that I wasn’t thinking of kits at the start. I was scratching my head trying to recreate the powerful effects of juice fasting but in my patients that could not take time off and go to a spa. In the city, living modern life, juice fasting just doesn’t work. Only juicing is great when you are in a spa setting. Busy life and only juicing for more than 3 days just doesn’t work. So that is how I arrived at this formula. Only then it occurred to me that I could help many more people with the amazing technology of today. This is my passion.

Q: What if I have a business dinner or social gathering at night? Can I eat my solid meal at night and have the two liquid meals during the day?

A: Yes, but do not make a habit of this. Ideally, you want to have your heaviest meal for lunch time when our digestion rate is at it’s highest.

Q: Can I snack during the Clean program?

A: You may snack as needed. Ideally, you want to try to snack as little as possible. The main goal during a detox program is to allow your cells to focus solely on detox, but when we constantly add food to the mixture (such as solid food, or constant snacking) our energy turn towards digestion and away from detoxification. However, if you do snack, the best ones are raw vegetables, and some berries such as blueberries or raspberries, or a handful of raw almonds or brazil nuts. Also, if you are feeling extremely hungry, you can have an extra smoothie or juice.

Q: Can I skip a shake if I am not hungry?

A: Yes. It is better if you don’t so you won’t get too hungry later on in the day. Maybe try drinking half a shake. Also, your liver will be needing those extra nutrients in the shake to repair and rejuvenate to its fullest capcity.

Q: Why didn’t my package come with any instructions or helpful resources?

A: We do not ship packages with any printed instructions as we are an environmentally-friendly company. When you got your confirmation e-mail after your order was placed, we did attach several helpful resources to get you started with the Clean Program. However, if you are having difficulty locating this e-mail, here is a list of resources that you will find very helpful.

The website below is an excellent support site. Please check out the tab: 21 day guide at the top of the page. Here, you can watch several videos of Dr. Junger guiding you throughout the cleanse and he also shares helpful tips about breaking the cleanse.

Clean Planner

Q: What if I missed a round of my supplements?

A: Just continue like you didn’t forget them. This will not detrimentally effect your detox. Do not take a double dose of the supplements at your next meal.

Q: How can I make my shake taste better?

A: If you are doing the program and one of your goals is maximum weight loss, we suggest that you just add water. In this case, add lots of water and ice, and blend thoroughly until the Nourish and Move are blended nicely together. If weight loss is an added bonus, but detox is the main focus, we have several suggestions to make the shake more tasty. You can coconut water, almond milk or hemp milk to give the shake a sweeter, richer flavor. Also, try adding some berries such as blueberries or raspberries to the shakes. Always add ice when possible to keep the shakes cold and blend.

Specifics about Individual Supplements

Q: Are all the supplements vegetarian/vegan?

A: While many of the Clean Program supplements are suitable for Vegetarians, the entire kit is not. If you are a vegetarian or vegan we recommend that instead you follow the Clean Program 21 Day Detox Plan outlined in Dr Junger’s book CLEAN. This detox program requires no products and is suitable for vegans and vegetarians. We are currently working on making all of the supplements in the Clean kit suitable for everybody, vegans included!

Q: Does Dr Junger recommend a specific herbal laxative?

A: You can try Swiss Kriss which you can purchase at almost any health food store or Dr Junger recommends intestinal formula # 1 from Dr Schulze which you can purchase at www.herbdoc.com.

Q: Do you have the ingredients for each supplement?

A: Yes, here is the breakdown of each supplement in the Clean Program.

Q: I’m allergic to gluten and dairy. Can I use the Clean Program?

A: While one of the products in the kit (Ease) contains a wheat enzyme, the overall kit is gluten free. Also, a few of our products contain probiotics that were grown on dairy cultures. If you have a dairy allergy please avoid the cleanse.

Q: Can I purchase the supplements individually on your website instead of purchasing the entire kit?

A: Yes, you can purchase individual supplements on our website at anytime.

Q: My ice pack and Encourage were warm when it arrived. Is this supplement still effective?

A: The ice pack is so that it remains cool in transit. Often the package does arrive a little warm. Not a problem though, our studies have shown that even if you leave Encourage out for 365 days, it only loses 5% of its value.

You only need 40 billion active microbes to do your cleanse (by Dr Junger’s recommendation). Encourage has 60 billion. Even if it loses 5% you still have enough to safely and effectively do your cleanse.

Cleansing Responses

Q: What can I do if I get HUNGRY during the program?

A: Consider the possibility that you don’t really know what being HUNGRY is.

In our cities, very few know hunger. What we call hunger is often just the desire to eat. The body sensation that we interpret as HUNGER is many times more accurately distinguished as boredom, anxiety, fear or another negative emotion if left alone and observed.

This is a golden opportunity. When that sensation arises, do nothing. Be aware of it and keep your attention on it. Ask yourself, what is this sensation? Soon enough you will notice it disappears without any food consumed. Often times, you may succeed RENAMING it altogether. Doing so will prevent you from eating for the wrong reasons. This is many times referred to as Emotional Eating. This is probably one of the main reasons Human Beings get to be overweight.

Q: My stools are green, should I worry?

A: No worries. Two of the supplements you are taking, Balance and Clear-1 can make your stools green. This will resolve once you stop taking them.

Q: What is a ‘normal’ amount to have come out in a bowel movement each day?

A: Whether in daily life or in a detox program there is no set number of bowel movements a day that everyone must have. “Optimal elimination” means as much as necessary to dispose of the materials that will affect the system negatively. With a good, healthy diet (free of toxins) one should eliminate feces after every meal. Most of us eliminate much less often than that—in general we are a constipated population—and it’s now considered normal to have one movement a day, with many people having even less than that. In its healthiest state, the stool should have the color and consistency of peanut butter (though some healthy foods like dark green vegetables turn it darker). When your stool is more solid than this consistency, it is an early sign of constipation. A healthy stool should not smell in a way that urges the evacuation of the bathroom and it should not take too much effort to eliminate.

When you switch from a poor diet to a better one, better bowel movements are of the earliest benefits you will get. It can be a major part of the relief and improvement that comes from a detoxification program, both physically and mentally. Once you are done with the 21 days, there is no reason for this benefit to be lost, provided you continue to eat and drink foods that do not cause mucus and irritation in your system, keep the intestinal flora in good repair, and maintain the twelve-hour window at night.

Q: What do I do if I get a headache?

A: Whatever you do, do not take medications. Headaches are very common during the first few days of detoxification, especially if you have been drinking caffeine such as coffee, tea or carbonated beverages. Ride them through. They will go away just as they came. If they are severe you can take a nap, take valerian root ( a natural product ), get a massage, get acupuncture, go for a walk, take a bath, or anything your instincts tell you that may help. Medications will improve the short-term situation, but your headaches will probably return even stronger when the medication wears off.

A: I feel very bloated from the cleanse. What should I do?

Here is a letter Dr Junger wrote in response to concerns about bloating:

The first few days of the CLEAN program are the hardest ones. I am referring to the fact that most uncomfortable symptoms, if they occur at all, happen within the first few days. For most of us, it is a drastic change in inner chemistry conditions when we go from our regular habits to doing the CLEAN program as it should.

Bloating, gases, and abdominal discomfort are the most common symptoms people experience when symptoms are experienced at all.
There are several reasons for that to happen that I know of after so many years of observation and study.

1) Die-off
The CLEAN program contains herbal antimicrobials to eliminate the bad bacteria and yeast overgrowth in a way that prepares the grounds for the troops of probiotics in ENCOURAGE to take over. Sometimes, when these bacteria or yeast die in large quantities inside our intestine, they release toxic chemicals in us, causing all kinds of symptoms. Some of these toxins from the bacteria that die are relaxing the musclez that should be contracting on and off, propulsing the food you just ate from one end to the other.

2) Intolerance to one of the ingredients in the CLEAN program. The most likely to cause intolerance, if that is what it is, is CLEAR 1 because of the strong oregano oil concentration. It can even cause a little burning. I am on day 3 of the CLEAN program myself, and I started experiencing this yesterday. In my case, I just bare with it. It’s uncomfortable enough, but it doesn’t prevent me from functioning. With this, and with anything else, use your common sense. Most people report that after a couple of days things return to their normal state and even improve.

3) Lack of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
This condition is probably more frequent than what we suspect. If this is the problem causing gases and bloating, you are probably very familiar with those symptoms. There are digestive enzymes with HCl, and those should be tried when suspected.

4) Parasites or other resistant squatters.
So many people have parasites and never find out- sometimes for decades. Since our bodies adapt, we live with them without any symptoms, but in a delicate balance. When our bodies are toxic and loaded with mucus, they become dull to most symptoms and all systems become sluggish. Occasionally someone will detoxify enough that his or her immune system gets jumpstarted. Now alert and active, if there are foreign creatures anywhere, the immune system will mount an attack, and this is when symptoms appear. So it may seem that you are relatively well and CLEAN made you sick, but the opposite is true. CLEAN makes you healthier and the systems that awaken start doing their thing. These are very different understandings, and the basic concept underlying this thinking is what keeps many people from being able to experience the benefits of sound and safe programs.

The grand majority of people ended up having a way more common problem, constipation. Ladies and gentlemen, let me be clear and loud: NO POO, NO GAIN. It is very important to eliminate as much as possible. Whatever you have to do, COLONICS, HERBAL LAXATIVES, HOT/COLD SHOWERS, CASTOR OIL……. whatever you need to do… Even if it causes some loose stools, it is better to poo more than less.

There is a simple self-research to help you figure things out if you are pooing and still bloating.

Stop the MOVE and continue everything else. If things correct in a day or two, continue the program without MOVE. Some people need more fiber than others. If you are the type that needs very little fiber, your CLEAN program will not suffer from stopping MOVE, at all.

If on the other hand you do need a lot of fiber, eating more raw vegetables and some fruit in your one meal a day will compensate.

In my experience, the most mind-blowing transformations happen to those who have the attitude of finding out how different things affect them, trying different options, or even completing the program with one, two or three ingredients less.

Drink lots of water, walk, exercise, take saunas, alternate between hot and cold water in your shower, get a massage, or acupuncture. Don’t just quit.

A lot of people read Gwyneths article on GOOP about how CLEAN worked wonders. Go read it again. She said “I followed it to the letter”. During her program, she encountered 3 or 4 moments that were hard and uncomfortable. But she tirelessly looked for a solution, and in one occasion it took trying a few different things over a few days. That is the attitude that pays big time. That is the attitude we want to inspire you to adopt so we can take you along the journey of rejuvenation.

Thank you all for doing something amazing to heal yourselves, because you are healing the planet at the same time.

With love and respect,
Dr Junger

Special Case Scenarios

Q: I work out and train hard physically. Can I still do Clean?

A: You can safely do the program. Weight loss is always greater amongst those who need to lose weight as the body is looking to find its best state of balance. Any pounds you do lose, you can put on strategically when you are done by eating plenty of good fats, clean proteins, and whole grains. However, it will help you to double up on your liquid meals during Clean, and to make sure your daily meals are satisfying in portion size. Include nuts in your snacks.

Q: I am on prescription medication from my doctor. Should I stop taking it?

A: If you are taking any kind of prescription drug, do not stop taking it during this program. Many prescription drugs can be safely stopped but some are not. There are certain serious conditions that require consistent blood levels of medications. Any change in diet can cause a change in its absorption and an increase or decrease of concentration in the blood as a result. In the case of blood thinners, anti-arrhythmia drugs, anti-epileptic drugs and chemotherapy agents, this can be life threatening.

Q: Who should not do this program?

Important Please DO NOT conduct the Clean Program if you are:
